Christian Zacharias was taught by Russian pianist Irène Slavin in the Hochschule in Karlsruhe (1960-69 and Vlado Perlemuter in Paris (1970-73). He won the Geneva competition in 1969, Van Cliburn in 1973, and his international career began when he won the Maurice Ravel competition in Paris in 1975.Considered one of the great German pianists, Christian Zacharias is an excellent musician. The highlights of his repertoire are Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Ravel. Many of his recordings have won prizes, and his record of the complete piano concertos by Mozart left its mark. He is regularly invited by international orchestras for prestigious festivals such as Salzbourg, La Roque-d'Anthéron, Edinburgh. He also plays chamber music in various ensembles such as Alban Berg, Cherubini and Guarneri Quartets.Zacharias has a sense of humour that seduces his public, and is exceptionally good at making complex pieces accessible. His participation in a film about Domenico Scarlatti for French television in 1990 proves it, as well as his concert-workshops on Schumann or in his musical programmes conceived for the Musée d'Orsay and France Musique radio.
